How do I know an assisted living home's license is current?
Look the home up by name on FloridaHealthFinder.gov, the State of Florida's facility search run by AHCA, and read the line that says License Status. It should say LICENSED, with an expiration date that hasn't passed.
What to look at
- License Status: it should say LICENSED.
- Current License Expires: the date the license runs out.
- Licensed Beds: how many residents the home may have.
- Inspection Reports: what the state found when it inspected.
What you might see
- PROVISIONAL means a temporary license. Ask the home why.
- IN REVIEW means the state is working on the renewal.
- Sometimes the page shows an expiration date that has already passed. Call AHCA or ask the home before you decide.
Special licenses
- ECC (Extended Congregate Care): the home may give more care than a standard license allows.
- LNS (Limited Nursing Services): the home may give some nursing services.
- LMH (Limited Mental Health): the home takes residents with certain mental health needs.
How we do it
- We check every home we list against AHCA's license list every night.
- We grade each home from its public inspection record by the same rule for everyone.
